Komai Shakudo Ware, which was named after a famous Japanese Family of Samurai Sword Fitments Makers, developed a specialized damascene or Shakudo mixed metal technique in 1855 that they used to decorate their swords and other artwork. Komai typically has a matte black base of iron or steel. The designs were hand etched into the base metal with a fine needle-point.
Tool and were then inlaid with precious metals such as Silver and 24k Gold to highlight the intricate designs. Due to the uniqueness and quality, Komai items were highly coveted from the Meiji period on. This piece is set in 950 quality silver with a beautiful butterfly shaped pendant panel at the front with various motif images on the panes around the necklace. This piece fastens with a box clasp, hidden behind a panel.
DATE/MARK: There is a "K24" on the clasp for 24 carat gold and "SILVER 0950" on the back of the butterfly for 950 parts / 1000 quality silver. The length of the necklace is 20 approx.
