Rare Antique Japanese Mixed Metal Plate Signed "Kobayashi Shi Sei" Meiji/Late Edp Period. A Very Rare Chorogi (Crosne) Farm Scene. Stachys affinis, commonly called crosne, Chinese artichoke, Japanese artichoke, knotroot, or artichoke betony, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the family Lamiaceae, originating from China. Its rhizome is a root vegetable that can be eaten raw, pickled, dried or cooked.

In Chinese and Japanese cuisine, S. In particular, its tuber is a part of Osechi, cooked for celebrating Japanese New Year. Dyed red by leaves of Perilla (red shiso) after being pickled, it is called chorogi. In Korea it is called choseokjam??? In French cuisine, its cooked tuber is often served alongside dishes named japonaise or Japanese-styled.

The fine artwork on this piece suggests this was not one of those souvenir pieces which usually depicts Samurais and Geishas. An inro is depicted by the side of the leg of an old man that says "Beware of Fire". Raised Gold Color "Kobayashi Shi Sei" Seal Mark on the back. There is also an additional seal mark of the artist and a smudged sign on the front as shown. Antimony is a possibility, but usually the back of the antique Japanese antimony plates shows dents associated with the process.

The back of this Plate is very well finished with a raided mark. The Plate was probably produced by "Kobayashi Kin Sei" before it was incorporated, hence "Kobayashi Shi Sei". Kobayashi Company later became a company that produced high quality sterling Silver products. The surface may have been professionally treated to prevent further wear. This item is in the category "Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Plates".
